The Baking Inspiration Behind My Designs

Real cupcakes, cookies, and muffins baked at home — and a whole lot of crumbs on my desk.

My baking inspiration comes from many places — Pinterest saves, cookbooks like the King Arthur Baking School, and the occasional visit to a bakery that makes me want to run home and recreate everything I just saw. I am always trying something new at home — muffins, cupcakes, cookies, all of it. And every time a new treat comes out of the oven, I start thinking about how it would look as a kawaii design.

Croissants and Baguettes

The Croissant Baguette pattern actually came from my baking bucket list. I have always wanted to learn how to bake croissants and baguettes from scratch in my own kitchen — I have been collecting recipes and doing my research, and when I finally accomplish that goal I will absolutely be sharing pictures and all the details here. Until then, the dream became a design! It turned into a fun kawaii pattern that honestly looks amazing as a desktop wallpaper.

Cupcakes: The Original Kawaii Treat

Cupcakes are basically made to be kawaii. The swirled frosting, the little wrapper, the endless flavor possibilities — they are so fun to draw. Caramelle herself has that same sweet, cheerful energy. I have drawn so many cupcake variations at this point and I am still not tired of it.

🍪 Fun fact: The name "Caramelle" comes from the Italian word for candy. She was always meant to be sweet!

How Real Food Becomes a Character

  • Start with the real thing — photo reference or sketch from life
  • Simplify the shape to its most recognizable silhouette
  • Add big round eyes and a tiny smile
  • Give it a little blush — everything is cuter with blush
  • Add sparkles because why not

The goal is always to make something that feels warm and familiar. When you see a Designs by Sweet ELM pattern, I want you to feel like you just walked into a cozy bakery on a rainy day. That's the whole vibe.
